The Recycle Bin on C: is Corrupted. Do you want to empty the Recycle Bin for this drive? YES or NO
Click No the message goes away until next time I either reboot, try to access the RB or delte files.
Click Yes I get:
The file name(s) would be too long for the destination folder. You can shorten the file names and try again, or try a location that has a shorter path.
Then it shows the file name ATE&affiliate=ihm-ip&market=CORPORATE&for..
Type: XML Document Size: 415 bytes Date modified: 11/8/2009
my options then are skip or cancel and it goes away on either radio button---- until next time
I never heard of this file can't find it in a search (I have complete Administrator rights and all hidden files should be visible)
I am currently using Windows 7 (home premium) and MS Office 2010 beta can't find the XML file there either.
Any solutions would be appreciated.
Hiya, try, go directly into.
C:$Recycle.Bin and delete from there.
Tried it LH, didn't work, but at least I found the files (2) same file, but it won't let me move, rename or delete get the same error message about to long of file name. and it is a very long filename. it will let me copy but that does me no good.
OK. Try this,
https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/ Take ownership of the s-x-x-xxxx file and try again.
Sorry to say LH, I already had that (Take ownership) installed and tried it to no avail either. You think I could do it from the command line? The path is very long as well as the filename. What gets me is how it got there in the first place and if it’s such a long filename how it was accepted on the system. I can’t send you a screen shot because I don’t have a website to load one to with a link but I think you got the Idea anyway.
Try this to rename and delete it,
http://www.freecommander.com/
One trick that used to fix the recycle bin in Vista (never tried it though in Win7) was to change the theme back and forth ( e.g. from Wndows7 classic to windows basic and back to windows7 classic). Maybe you try that.
Hey LH Thanx for a great new program that I can use for a million other things ..BUT I still cant fix the problem, If you try to rename, delete, etc. (with Free commander at least it gave me the option to try) but I get error message comes up file not found, I went to CMD and sure enough there is no file on that path.
I can evey make copies of it and rename the copies and dellte them but not the original two files (Same filename) this is the path..
Free download paperport 11 software. c:$recycle.bins-1-5-21-2162128629-3638226409-1557042125-1000$rnkzzrq.oldusersrandappdatalocalmicrosoftwindowstemporary internet fileslowcontent.ie5jy8vrqq5
and this is the filename: ATE&affiliate=ihm-ip&market=CORPORATE&format=IHEARTMUSIC&pagepos=5000&content1=widget&content2=stripped&localcontent=strippedcountry&type=local&type2=local[1]
So still working on the problem and still appreciate your help
Do a registry cleanup with,
http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ and then a defrag with, http://www.piriform.com/defraggler
FYI - i was just with Microsoft they suggested Chkdsk /f -- That didn't work either i'll do the regclean and get back to you
OK Solution Found: The registry cleaner did not work because the recycler error message popped up every time it tried to repair the registry.
So what I did was go to the command prompt, made sure I wast at the root = C: and just removed the folder (directory) the old fashioned way
(Actually as long as you specify the root it probably wont matter but It's quicker cuz the path is shorter to find actually it's instananeous once you hit the enter button
C:>rd /s c:$Recycle.Bin
c:$Recycle.Bin, Are you sure (Y/N)? y (hit enter)
C:>
then reboot, Windows automatically makes a new empty recycle bin:
for those with other OS's you need to know the name of you recycle bin it could be recycled or recycler check your properties tab for the recyle bin folder for the folder name then go to command prompt and just substitute the correct name
i.e.
C:>rd /s c:recycler c:recycler, Are you sure (Y/N)? y or C:>rd /s c:recycled c:recycled, Are you sure (Y/N)? y
if you type in the wrong name you will get 'The system cannot find the file specified.'
then you need to go back and find out for sure what your folder name is.
NOTE OF WARNING: if you do this everthing in your recycle bin will be deleted permantly
Thanks LH for your Help sorry it didn't work but at least it got me to thinking more of a way to fix the problem and I got a couple of cool utilities out of it.
P.S. For the Geeks out there that never use the command prompt or are to young to have been a DOS geek like I was here's what the rd is I did in the solution
RMDIR [/S] [/Q] [drive:]path
RD [/S] [/Q] [drive:]path
/S Removes all directories and files in the specified directory
in addition to the directory itself. Used to remove a directory tree.
/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to remove a directory tree with /S
RMDIR will work just as well it means Remove Directory and it will work on any directory on your system so be very careful - remember the /s will remove all sub directorys in that tree (path) under the directory you wish to delete.
In answer to whs's note above: yes, this has worked on some similar problems as well as just changing the icon and the restting the default icons for the empty and full recycle bins. I tired that early on, but because there was a phantom file in there and the registry couldn't fix it, your solution didn't work for me. Your solution also works sometimes when someone accidently/onpurpose tries to delete the recycle bin and gets the same type of error message. but thanks for your input.
Windows 7 Recycle Bin Missing
PPS to the geeks only certain system files like the recycle bin will be recreated on reboot 99.9% of directories are gone forever if you delete them this way
Thanks for explaining what the command line meant. As I wrote a How-to not long ago and had to use that command in the How-to, but I will be honest did not know what each part meant like the 'S' and the 'Q', the only thing I knew is that it deletes a specified directory.
Well thanks again..
Jordan :-)
Not a problem I used to teach DOS classes back in the day for Dell computer co. if you ever need to know that info just type this
[whatever the command is] in this case C:> rd /? or you could type C:> help rd and a list of all the flags (Swiches) will pop up you can type C:>help and get a list of every command available here's a sample
C:>help For more information on a specific command, type HELP command-name ASSOC Displays or modifies file extension associations. ATTRIB Displays or changes file attributes. BREAK Sets or clears extended CTRL+C checking. BCDEDIT Sets properties in boot database to control boot loading. CACLS Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files. CALL Calls one batch program from another. CD Displays the name of or changes the current directory. CHCP Displays or sets the active code page number. CHDIR Displays the name of or changes the current directory. CHKDSK Checks a disk and displays a status report.
NOTE: if you don't have total admin-rights you won't be able to use many of the commands and so are very dangerous to the non informed, thats why they are where they are, amongst other reasons,
This is getting off topic now but if you want to start or maybe there is an 'old DOS or CMD topic we could do,and I would be happy to contribue 35 years of geekness to it.
Also there are 'hidden commands' that will not be listed mostly used by programmers
Shieldwolf. I was a dos geek too :) But have forgotten most of it now. Plus there are more commands, switches, etc now.
Yes LH, I also saw your comment about assembly he he right down to the bit eh? or Less! Many of the new CMD commands, of course, are windows oriented. below are a few of my favorite nice and deadly ones.
Fortunatly the Administrator can lock users out of even accesing the command module
Yes, I tought DOS classes for Dell tech support trainies back in the early days of Dell
BCDEDIT Sets properties in boot database to control boot loading.
CACLS Displays or modifies access control lists (ACLs) of files. ICACLS Display, modify, backup, or restore ACLs for files and directories. MKLINK Creates Symbolic Links and Hard Links ROBOCOPY Advanced utility to copy files and directory trees WMIC Displays WMI information inside interactive command shell.
I have quick question: since I just singned on here at HTG everytime I log out or change forums I have to re login and have to reset my password. is there an area on HTG to make problems to the website administrator.
or am I missing something?
Just on addendum to the recycle Issue - a user or anyone for that matter should not name a personal file recycle, recycled myrecycle.bin etc.. you could end up with conflicts and the above solution might delete the wrong directory in that case.
The login/password thing, is an ongoing problem. I will relay it to The Geek. Happened to me too, the other day.
HEY LH check out this site if you ever forget there are even some Window 7 Commands there
ANOTHER Addendum to the recycle Issue --- I have a external data back up drive and I had to do the same fix on it as well, so if you have multiple drives or computers check each recycle bin to see if it works else fix each one seperatly and reboot after each fix I wouldn't reccomend to do 2 drives at once. I couldn't tell you how this would work on seperate partions or over a network as my system isn't set up that way and I don't have enough info on Window 7 yet to see when and where it automatically installs recycle bins.
Good advice. I always go through my bins individually. Sometimes the direct delete doesn't work.
Assuming the recycling bin files are actually on a mapped drive / home drive
I just fixed this problem myself
2 easy fixes

On the server where the user files are located you must make sure they have the correct permissions on the directories where the recycle bin files are located.
Windows 7 - Vista creates these 3 folders on Home Network drives when the user logs in to the network for the first time.
Sometimes these become corrupt during a system crash or server reboot if the user is logged in during the reboot process.
My Music
My Pictures My Videos
Right click My Music folder > Select Properties > Select Security tab > Select advanced > Select change permissions > Put check marks in
Include Inheritable permissions from this objects parent
Replace all child permissions with inheritable permissions from this object
Click ok and save
The user will now have permissions to see the recycling bin files and will no longer receive the error about being corrupt.
Fix 2
Simply delete these three folders out of the users directory the next time they login it will re-create the folders automatically with the correct permissions. Topic Closed
